ICPC tackles bottlenecks in ports - By Boco Edet - posted on Monday 18th May 2009 A task force to check extortion at the nation’s ports and terminals as well as establish standards to maintain cleaner and safer ports is to be set up by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in conjunction with the Port Industry Anti-Corruption Standing Committee.
This was the resolution reached when the Port Anti-Corruption Chairman, Mr. Val Usifor met with Justice Emmanuel Ayoola, ICPC Chairman at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Resident Consultant Media and Events, Folu Olamiti said in a statement that “the task force would be a monitored exploratory mission made up of undercover officials of the ICPC.”
“The team would mount positions at the Ports and work hard to check the abuse of corruption with a view of having clean ports,” Olamiti said.
Mr. Usifor noted that the present congestion at the ports was caused by deliberate delays in processing papers for the release of cargos, excessive collection of sample by some agencies, obsolete and inadequate agencies and rowdy environment at some terminals.
He said the unprecedented congestion at Lagos Ports where more than 200 ships were waiting to berth was due mainly to the disagreement between the Independent marketers and the Federal Government.
