Kutigi: Corrupt Judges to Face EFCC, ICPC
- By Funso Muraina in Abuja - posted on Wednesday 24th June 2009

Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi, yesterday said that corrupt judicial officer would be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for investigation and prosecution.
Speaking in Abuja at the opening of a two-week Induction Course for newly appointed Judges and Kadis, organised by the National Judicial Institute (NJI), the Chief Justice reiterated that the judiciary was monitoring the conduct of judicial officers.
“As you are aware, the society expects much from the judiciary and as judicial officers, you are expected to live above board like Caesar’s wife.
"The National Judicial Council is watching and any erring judicial officer will be appropriately sactioned. In addition, the powers of investigation and prosecution vested in the EFCC and the ICPC may also be exercised over Judicial Officers”, Kutigi said.
He told the new Judges and Kadis to abstain from anything that may compromise their exalted positions and integrity, independence of the judiciary and preservation of the rule of law.
He also warned against reckless granting of ex-parte applications for interim or interlocutory injunctions without due regard to the likely inconvenience it may cause, saying that there are cases in the past where such injunction had caused great embarrassment to the judiciary.
He further warned them to guard against the granting of bail to accused persons on scandalous conditions, saying that the code of conduct for judicial officers was there to guide them to maintain good conduct, comportment and decorum as a judge.
Also speaking, Administrator, National Judicial Institute, Justice Umaru Eri, told the judges and kadis to shun bribery and resist all acts which could tarnish their exalted positions, saying that a judge who perverts the course of justice for any consideration is worse than the accused standing trial before him.
“You must be disciplined. Never be a lilly-livered judicial officer who is ever ready to dance to the panders of the siren. You must be morally exemplary, spiritually rich and intellectually alert as our entire moral and social values are greatly dependent on the courage, honesty, diligence and patriotism with which you administer the laws of the land", he said.
