ICPC moves to check corruption in LGs - By Boco Edet - posted on Wednesday 5th August 2009 The planned launch of the Local Government Integrity Initiative on August 10 by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is to ensure that council chairmen spend funds judiciously.
The initiative is a proactive measure taken by the ICPC to reduce corruption at the third tier of government. “We are targeting those at the grassroots to sensitize them on how they can make their chairmen accountable,’’ the anti-corruption agency’s Spokesman, Folu Olamiti, said yesterday.
Olamiti says after the initiative is unveiled, President Umaru Musa Yar’adua will officially launch the programme. “Our strategy is that after the unveiling we will go round all the states having one on one discussion with the governors so that they can easily buy into it before the formal launching by the president,” he said.
He added that the initiative when implemented will prove that “if the local government bosses can be checked from the grassroots it will be difficult for them to pilfer public funds.”
A statement issued by the commission said the official unveiling will take place in Katsina State.
Those expected to attend the programme include all 774 Local Government chairmen, all states chairmen of the Association of the Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) and the states commissioners for Local Government Affairs.
