No nation develops under corruption – Anyaoku - By RAZAQ BAMIDELE - posted on Tuesday 11th August 2009 Former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has asserted that no nation can develop under corruption. Anyaoku made the assertion on Monday in Ikorodu, Lagos State, while delivering a special, ‘Mentoring Lecture’ at the graduation ceremony of the students of the Information Communication Technology Centre (ICT), Ikorodu.
The students were products of a Member of the House of Representatives, Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s Free Empowerment Scheme, started six years ago.
The former Commonwealth scribe lamented that, “Nigeria was at the same development levels with nations like Malaysia and South Korea.”
He regretted that, “today, the two countries are miles ahead of us,” while blaming corruption for the country’s backwardness. “Nigeria is now different from what we used to have in many ways. Young people then believed the only way to success was through hard work. They thought of careers that would give them satisfaction and legitimate ways of earning a living. “But now, we have a country where money is worshipped. The preoccupation of Nigerians, except a few is to make quick money through dubious ways. Corruption has become endemic in the country,” Anyaoku lamented.
And since no society that wants to progress should not have such a characteristic, according to the renowned diplomat, the youths in the country must be ready to effect a change. “Be clear in your mind and be committed to hard work in any career you might choose. Don’t be tempted by corruption. Work hard and make it your goal to serve your country and humanity. Get self fulfilment by contributing to the welfare of the people,” he admonished the youth.
While describing Abike Dabiri-Erewa as a ‘mentor and role model’ for putting the youths on the path of future success, Anyaoku advised the youths to have a strong mind to say, ‘no’ to corruption and all forms of corrupt tendencies.
