'Existence Of EFCC, ICPC Means Govt Is Ready To Fight Graft'
- By Innocent Oweh,Correspondent, Abuja - posted on Monday 31st August 2009

Minister of Information and Communications, Dora Akunyili, has said the existence of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) in the country was an acknowledgement that corruption still pervades the system.

She assured, however, that the responsibilities the anti-graft agencies were saddled with were a manifestation of the country's resolve at re-branding.

She said their simultaneous existence ought to portray to the international community that the Federal Government was sincere in tackling issues of corruption.

Akunyili said this in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, when she launched the national Re-branding Campaign for the South South geo-political zone.

She reiterated that efforts at image boosting for Nigeria dates back to past administrations, including the military eras.

She observed that all the previous efforts failed on the basis of continuity and lack of commitment.

"Nigeria at this historical time is not new to preaching the message of attitudinal change or re-orientation; government has tried severally to re-brand in many ways.

"We can all briefly remember the existence of MAMSER, War Against Indiscipline (WAI), Ethical Revolution, Green Revolution and the latest being 'Heart of Africa Project'.

"WAI worked briefly during that period because we were focused, organised and developed a sense of commitment to nation building.

"Unfortunately, WAI did not succeed; it disappeared with the government that put it in place, 'Heart of Africa' could not fly because it was launched abroad," Akunyili said.

The minister also observed that the launching of the 'Heart of Africa' largely crashed because it became elitist in nature as well as some contentious disagreement surrounding the slogan.
