ICPC arrests anti-corruption volunteer - By Boco Edet - posted on Tuesday 1st September 2009 Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has arrested the leader of the National Anti-Corruption Volunteer Corps (NAVC), Umuahia North Chapter in Abia for allegedly impersonating operatives of the commission.
Reuben Onyemachi was arrested last week following a report by the owner of a fuel station alleging he was summoned by him for interrogation and allegedly claimed to be acting on the instructions of the ICPC chairman. NAVC is an initiative of ICPC aimed at enlisting volunteers to fight graft in Nigeria. The volunteers are not empowered to arrest or prosecute persons for corruption. ICPC said Onyemachi used his position as NAVC leader to send letters alleging corruption against several organisations and inviting them for interrogation.
Head of Public Enlightenment Mike Sowe said the suspect is currently in the custody of the commission and may soon be charged to court. Mike Sowe said, “Prior to his arrest, the suspect had written a letter to one Mr. Nwokorie Sampson, the owner of Vinan Petroleum Ltd in Uzuakoh Road in Umuahia summoning him for questioning on the construction of his fuel station. When the owner of the filling station received the letter which had the ICPC logo printed on it, he decided to seek the counsel of his lawyer before answering the invitation from the suspect and in the process discovered that he was not a staff of the Commission.”
After his arrest, operatives discovered letters signed by the suspect carrying the ICPC logo in his office.
