ICPC Probes LASU VC Over Alleged Graft
- By Alexandra Mede, Snr Correspondent, Abuja - posted on Monday 26th October 2009

Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has launched an investigation into allegations of corruption levelled against the Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU), Lateef Hussein, by some staff of the institution.

The petitioners, according to an ICPC source, had alleged that the VC awarded contracts to members of his family and friends without involving the Works and Services Department of the university.

According to the source, the petitioners alleged that the manner of award of contracts by the VC had led to shoddy execution of such jobs, claiming that LASU has lost huge revenue in the process.

He added that the petitioners further alleged that between 2006 and 2008, the VC purchased 80 Kia Rio salon cars without input from officials of the Works and Services Department.

The VC was also alleged to have taken over printing of some text books from the centre responsible for awarding the contract.

It was also alleged that Hussein doubled the cost of printing the books.

The petitioners, according to our source, also faulted the VC on the renovation of a structure within the university campus to the tune of N56 million.

He added that some of the petitioners have been invited by investigators of the anti-graft commission in Abuja to authenticate their allegations.

ICPC Consultant on Media and Events, Folu Olamiti, confirmed receipt of the petition but declined further comment.
